Set design help needed

Hi, I am the artistic designer for a renaissance Fair in California. We have been talking about replacing the roof on one of our buildings for years but have never seemed to find the right material to re-roof it. The building is a temporary one - set up for a 2 day fair. The frame is welded metal to which the sides (1/4" ply) is bolted on. It is 8 sided with teh current roof being 1/2 plywood with shingles stapled to the wood. I would love to figure out how to make the roof 1) lighter and 2) make it look like thatch. Any ideas?
Thanks ahead of time -

    Hi Liz,
I'm not really sure how permanent this temporary structure is supposed to be and how weather resistant you want it, but there is a wall board that is around an eighth thick that is for shower recesses etc. A bit lighter than half inch. Then of course you could go to a garden centre and ask about hay bails and use that to give the illusion of thatch. Or you could go all out and get a thatcher in to do the roof from scratch if it's a more permanent temporary structure, maybe even contact the local SCA. I'll check around during the week and see if I can get more worthwhile information for you.
