I am having auditions for my new movie "Aberrant Behavior" Saturday June Seventh at Mamma Buzz Cafe in downtown Oaklands Art District 2318 Telegraph Ave from 4-6PM. If your interested in the movie you can e-mail me at: aberrantbehaviormovie@gmail.com. I have already casted some of the roles and have people working on it, I just have not cast all of them yet and of course the female lead.

There will be some paid roles (of course the leads) but this is a low budget (around 25-35,000 or so) affair so it won't be a whole lot. Just to warn you.

Aberrant Behavior, is basically a love story about two self destructive anarchistic-y street kids who have an exaggerated form of pica, a disorder where people feel compelled to eat non-food materials, carpet, dirt, soap, drano, various chemicals, etc. as portrayed as a drug addiction. They have a very co-dependent relationship and with there disorders too , they literally destroy each other.

There's more to it, but that's the basic synopsis. If you can't make it to the auditions, you can send me a head shot with resume, or whatever you want. We can then decide when and where to meet.

THERE WILL BE SOME SEXUALITY AND NUDITY FOR THE TWO LEADS, AS WELL AS MISTY AND FOGGY TO A LESSER DEGREE. PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT ME FOR THOSE ROLES, IF YOUR NOT COMFORTABLE WITH THAT. THANK YOU.

I will be hiring for many roles, all ages (over 18) races, sizes, etc. But here are the main characters:
Main Characters:

LEADS:
Victor Muertos: (Mid to late twenties) Half Mexican/Half white (Half latino/half white will probably work). Black hair, down to chin and five o clock shadow. (Flexible though). Tall and thin but not too thin. Dark, brooding, depressed, prone to long winded sarcastic, cynical rants. Living off the state for mental depression, and addiction, but eventually breaks himself from the state. He hates the state, and normal life in general. He hates almost everything. He is sort of sloppy hipster, slightly emo, slight slight slight goth meets street kid. Light or no body mod, piercings, etc. He eventually lives on the street because of choice.He falls in love with Aiko. SOME NUDITY AND SEXUALS SITUATIONS REQUIRED-CAST

Aiko Zumbi (18-early twenties or look like it) Half Japanese/Half German (or Japanese, or half Japanese/Half white). Shorter than Victor, thin but still slightly curvy.
Street kid with a bit of dark hippie. Has been sexually abused as a child. Prone to violence. Prone to long winded rants, or sometimes just total silence. Dark, cynical, with a very bleak view of life. Body mods, tattoo's, piercings, fine. Dreaded or colored hair fine as well. Actually preffered. She falls in love with Victor. SOME NUDITY AND SEXUAL SITUATIONS REQUIRED.

SUPPORTING LEADS:
Pedida Muertos- (20's -40's)-Mexican- Victor's nearly catatonic - mute drug addict mother, who is usually messing around with strange men, and drugged up. Mostly abuses Victor through neglect. Mostly shown in flashbacks, but one scene in present as well. Young actress aged to look older in present, or vice versa.

Misty & Foggy (20's) two girls that Victor and Chad meet at the bar, who are wasted, and act and look like twins. Very ditzy, drunk, corporate, normal. They take Victor and Chad back to there place. Drunken debauchery ensues.

Spic 'N' Span (20's -40's)- One of the horrible mascots for the advertising firm Victor works for, "Spic n Span's Whiten it up" Cleaning product. They play racist cliched versions of mexican house workers. Think Samo. It's meant to be horrible, and it of course offends Victor.

Aiko's Father-
A militant cold hearted man who sexually abuses aiko. Must be bilingual Japanese & English

Aiko's Mother-
Always screaming at Aikos father. Bi-lingual fluent in German & English

VARIOUS:
Hipster's (18-30) Some with speaking roles. A house party Victor crashes.

Office workers (20's -on) Some with speaking roles.

Various small roles for the horrible commercials and promo's from the firm Victor briefly works for

Other roles as well-Not listed

ABOUT THE CLASS:
Started in 2005, this 8 session course (over ten weeks) is designed to develop 15-20 minute professional level solo theater pieces using a variety of writing and performance techniques. Each student will create a unique and personal performance piece that will culminate in a public theater performance at the end of the course. The class is recommended for performers of all disciplines, including actors, writers, comedians, spoken word artists, musicians and dancers. People of all levels of experience are welcome, from those who have never been on stage before to those preparing a piece for a professional production or audition.

ABOUT W. KAMAU BELL:
W. Kamau Bell has been a Bay Area comedian, writer, and director for more than ten years. Kamau is a favorite at Cobbs Comedy Club, The Punch Line, The Porchlight Storytelling Series, and is half of Siskel & Negro on Live 105. Kamau has appeared at The Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal, on Comedy Centrals Premium Blend, and Byron Allens Comics Unleashed. Also he is featured in The Soft Skull Press publication What Would Bill Hicks Say? Kamau has been profiled in The San Francisco Chronicle on three separate occasions, including not ironically during Black History Month. Kamau is currently hard at work performing his debut solo show, "The W. Kamau Bell Curve: Ending Racism in About an Hour". The SF Guardian declared, "W. Kamau Bell plays against type and comes with not only the insights you wish you had spewed first but also the wit.." The SF Weekly called him smart, stylish, and very much in the mold of politically outspoken comedians like Dave Chappelle and Margaret Cho, although he was more excited that they called him handsome. However, Kamau is most proud of being the leader of The Solo Performance Workshop.
ONE-HOUR FREE CONSULTATION:
Sign up through Brown Paper Tickets and receive an hour of free consultation w/ Kamau to help prepare for the class.

My son is starting to apply to colleges, he wants to double major: acting and film. Of course NYU is the first choice, we've also been to Juilliard, which was a little too sterile feeling and not enough of a liberal arts school. I've heard that Northwestern and DePaul are good, I know that Carnegie Melon was, is it still? Which schools in California are best? I'd be so grateful for any advice, school names, or even tips about how to find out. It just seems that whenever I try to search, I get all kinds of garbage, like "Jolene-Marie's school of Dramatics" or ads for sending off the equivalent of college tuition for online instructional courses :)

The two main roles are the ones that require it but there are others.

Here is the original posting:

I have a new movie called "Aberrant Behavior" auditioning Sat. 1/19 3:30-6:3- at the Dark Room SF 2263 Mission off of 19th and Mission@ 3:30 - 6:30. (My first movie "the period" came out through Sub Rosa Cinema can be seen/bought at Netflix www.myspace.com/theperiodmovie, as well as various other outlets)
Aberrant Behavior, is basically about two self destructive anarchistic-y street kids who have an exaggerated form of pica, a disorder where people feel compelled to eat non-food materials, carpet, dirt, soap, drano, various chemicals, etc. as portrayed as a drug addiction. There's more to it, but that's the basic synopsis. If you can't make it to the auditions, you can send me a head shot with resume, or whatever you want. We can then decide when and where to meet.

I will be hiring for many roles, all ages (over 18) races, sizes, etc. But here are the main characters:
Main Characters:

Emma May (20's to 30's) Actress must be thin, because character is anorexic. Very fake, superficial, manic laughing. Very self deluded. She doesn't really see her anorexia as a problem, she think she looks great though she's obviously dieing and goes to extremes to keep herself thin. She is always dressed up elegantly and thinks of herself as a proper lady even when doing something grotesque . She is a head executive at a advertising/pr firm that she gets a Victor a brief job at, through meeting him in a class over there mutual addictions. (Brief Nudity /Partial a few times)

Caseworker Joe (30's-40's) Written has hispanic, but open. Larger guy, tall, built like a shed, a bit fat but not flabby fat. Very coarse, to the point, direct "Take no shit" kind of guy. Very normal, buys into the whole big house in the suburbs, good job, etc. He is Victor's Caseworker, and is tired of Victor's Shit, and believes he is not trying to quit. (None)

Glitters- a gay gangster rapper, take everything that's a cliche and horrible about it and flip it so that it's gay (some, will also need male models)

Pedida Muertos-Victors Mother. A nearly catatonic morally apprehensive drug addict who's always sleeping with random guys and ignoring her child (Some nudity/sexual situations can be negotiated to less)

And then random visuals, nudes for some flashback scenes (of some sort of psuedo porn the main characer shot) a girl that Victor sleeps with before he falls in love with Zumbi (requires brief nudity/sexuality) and some body part imagery that will not feature the face of the actor/actress, among other thing

thanks for reading
Residential project for experienced movers

The American performer Nita Little will be the special guest of our association, first time in Italy as guest artist, for giving the project “Restless Peace”. The intensive workshop with Nita Little is in the calendar of our Residential Projects 2008, and will be from April 25 to May 2, 2008 in the beautiful Etruscan city of Orvieto, in middle Italy.

After the end of the workshop, on May 3rd and 4th, the association will plan also two days with the International Springfest Jam.

The intensive workshop and the Jam will be held both at the headquarters of the cultural Association Caravajal15 residenza dinamica, in the prestigious sixteenth century rooms of the Palazzo Caravajal-Simoncelli, in Orvieto.

Application for registration in the project with Nita Little is open from January 7th. For information and more details write to: info@contactfestival.it, or telephone to +39 0763.341479.

Nita Little
Restless Peace
The urge to move, to go where we have never been, is the soul of our practice in this workshop.
Developing a "home base", a place of personal and creative safety is as important as the journey; how wonderful to be free when you have a home! We learn, how like nomads, we may carry our home with us, even as we track paths in and out of unfamiliar territory.
We focus on developing the mental, emotional, and physical skills that enable dancers to travel creatively. Utilizing a full dance vocabulary, we integrate gestured movement improvisation with contact improvisation and build the skills to consciously weave these two forms.

We investigate “states” of mind / “states” of body as a means to develop and direct creative work in our improvisations. Developing the ability to describe and craft subtle levels of action and experience, we boost our physical potential while increasing our readability. Moving in solo, duet and group forms, we gain compositional tools for structural orientation; like torches, they light the way.

This workshop is developed for experienced movers who wish to pass beyond the threshold of old patterns. The restless human drive that takes us out of comfort, urges us to meet the unfamiliar, to move into, through and with the unknown, is a dance artist’s call. Here, we harness that drive and discover how, moving at the speed of our restless calling, we can find peace.

This class culminates in a creative work for performance at the workshop and at Zipfest08.

Things we will do:
Go deep into the physical philosophy behind contact improvisation.
Learn underlying CI principles that manifest as pathways of action.
Build the tools for safe physical and creative relationships
Discover different spatial orientations: vertical/hierarchical and horizontal/diffuse.
Learn about our temporal orientation and develop tools that modulate time.
Develop the skills to be able to move freely between states of mind.
Deepen our agreements to open to life, to the dance.
Honor peace.

about Nita Little
www.nitalittle.com
Nita Little has been developing, choreographing, performing and teaching improvisational dance for the past thirty-six years, notably Contact Improvisation, which she helped evolve from its inception with Steve Paxton, Nancy Stark Smith and others.
She collaborated in numerous performing companies introducing Contact Improvisation throughout the United States. She is a master teacher with former students all over the world, who are themselves now master dancers and teachers: Gretchen Spiro, Andrew Harwood, Frey Faust, Scott Wells, Julie Oak, Peter Bingham to name just a few. Through CI she discovered her abiding interest in the evolution of consciousness and the mind body relationship. Since 1981 she has been developing an evolving curriculum called The Mind in Motion, which explores the range of experiential states along the mind-body continuum and reveals principles that define Contact Improvisation as well as other movement forms. This work is informed by her investigation of the mind through work such as hypnotherapy and NeuroLinguistic Programming.

As a performing artist her current work is a mix of both formal and improvisational choreography and scores. While anchored in process, it frequently explores character, story, and concept.

Nita received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in choreography and was on the California Arts Council Touring Program.
The latter award was to her solo dance company, NITA LITTLE DANCE THEATRE, which she began in 1984, continued through 1990, and reinstated as a pickup company in 2000. In 2002 Nita created Playing God, an hour-long dance opera that received funding through the Dance USA /National Endowment for the Arts.

Over the years Nita has been both faculty and guest artist at numerous colleges and universities including New York University, California Institute for the Arts, Texas Christian University, Temple University, Tufts University, Scripps College and UC Santa Barbara.

Nita teaches and performs yearly at national and international dance festivals including ImPulsTanz, Vienna, The Side Step Festival, Helsinki, Kontakt Budapest International Improvisation Festival, the International Contact Festival Freiburg, Germany,the Seattle Festival of Alternative Dance and Improvisation and the West Coast Contact Improvisation Festival, Berkeley California.
She also teaches locally and nationally throughout the year. She lives with her son in Santa Cruz Mountains in California.

As she has pioneered a path in the understanding of the mind/body/spirit relationship, Nita's mission, conscious evolution, has been the backbone of her passion and her practice. Her goal is to see, feel and reveal grace in all its forms and as it exists in the actions of the mind and the body.
Logomotion Writing Workshop
Sometimes our words don't have access to what we know in our bones.
In this workshop we will be improvising moving and speaking, and we will be writing.
While our writing will stimulate our imagination and support our improvisations, our improvisations will enrich our writing with a kinesthetic timing to phrasing and windows on sudden thoughts and memories.
Our activities will include studio sessions of improvisational moving and speaking, spontaneous writing, walks in town, with partners, for conversations about matters large and small, and private times to write and to craft our writings and to read them to each other.
We will borrow from the writing practice of Natalie Goldberg as found in her books “Writing Down the Bones” and “Wild Mind”, discovering the associations that gather spontaneously around a chosen point of departure.
As our movement work will include many activities in partners and in groups, some of our writing will include more than one voice, focusing on the relationships between the thoughts of different people.
A goal will be to write with wild mind and intention, and with awareness of world.

Jennifer Dunning writes in her 1991 New York Times review: “Simone Forti presented her first dance program in 1960 and has since then had a steadily increasing influence on post-modernist choreographers interested in exploring ‘natural’ or non-formalist movement and dance”.
ILLEGAL ECHO /untitled echo

Direction and Performance: Isak Immanuel
Including contributions from Robert L. Terrell, Kanoko Nishi, and Odessa Chen

Illegal Echo / untitled echo finds its origin in an excavation of memory, personal and public, and how in this terrain we can find irrepressible connections in the present world of both movement and images. Integrating dance-theater with photojournalism, the work navigates the intersecting landscapes of peripheral identity, transience and the instability of both body and social standing. To dance a falling line of recall. The distances between myth, allusion, and concrete subject, the missing/searching, outsider/insider, and the internal markers to what is one’s said society or place of origin are dually explored through the medium of dance and visual theatre.

The work contains a diverse landscape of sound from the classical to the urban, from noise to silence, featuring vocalist/indy-musician Odessa Chen and classically trained pianist/new music advocate Kanoko Nishi combined with an assemblage of street/field recordings. It will also feature an image to image dialogue with veteran photojournalist Robert L. Terrell.

In part, this new work has been made from the research, distillation, and trace of a two month movement workshop and impromptu writing engaged with local homeless and formerly homeless individuals here in the SF Bay Area. An extension of this work will be exhibited in the lobby gallery space.

Floor of Sky Projects is supported in part by the Zellerbach family fund and is fiscally sponsored by 21 Grand.

``````
To MIFUNE
By Christy Funsch with K808 and Skorpio
Performed by Glenn Curtis, Leonore Deaton, Christy Funsch, Jennifer A. Minore, Phoenicia Pettyjohn, Noel Rokswel, Sarah Sass, and Skorpio
Inspired by the charismatic Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune (1920-1997), To Mifune tells the story of a cowgirl’s (Christy Funsch) journey to meet her samurai idol (Skorpio). The characters for this work are drawn from Mifune’s roles, as well as from roles in acclaimed Japanese film-maker Akira Kurosawa’s Yojimbo, Stray Dog, and The Seven Samurai. Funsch’s work examines how one’s individuality shifts through interactions with others: movement is borrowed, shared, exchanged, and exaggerated among all of the characters. The protagonist’s idea of who she is changes as her context changes, and by the time she meets the person she thought was her idol, she has come to appreciate the perhaps less grand---though certainly not less admirable---heroics of those she has met on her journey.
Hip-hop DJ K808 mixes live original beats with samples from both Kurosawa’s film Yojimbo and country singer Patsy Montana into a living sound score for the work. The result combines multiple voices with a hip-hop sensibility, which Funsch defines as “an assertion of individuality”. Funsch’s idiosyncratic collection of performers for To Mifune exemplifies her fascination with style as a way of linking the personal with the collective. According to Funsch, “When we create a little truth for ourselves, a way we want to be seen, we are usually seeking empathy. The commonality of this impulse connects us, regardless of the diversity of our movement choices.”
To Mifune is supported in part by the Zellerbach family fund, and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation
Funsch Dance Experience is a fiscally sponsored project of Dancers’ Group
This play is registered with the Writers Guild of America, but I am looking for readers to give me an honest critique to see if I want to make any changes while there is still time.
A brief synopsis:
What if a female Latina gangbanger moves from the big city to a small community to stay with her aunt and uncle, but she brings her colorful ways with her?
CHOLA The Play will take you on a journey as Lupe, a nineteen-year-old Chola from Fontana, California arrives at her relatives’ home and the drama begins.
The last census showed 228 people in the town, though technically it wasn’t really a township. Not Yet. Perhaps in a few years they’d get around to it, but there was no hurry. Things were slow out here. Life was predictable, simple, quiet. At least until Lupe arrived.
So what does a Chola do in such a remote place to keep from getting bored? Old habits die hard, they say. And as Lupe goes about “fitting in,” her big city ways soon bump up against the local lifestyle.
If you are interested in reading it, message me with your email and I will send it to you.
We have been talking about replacing the roof on one of our buildings for years but have never seemed to find the right material to re-roof it. The building is a temporary one - set up for a 2 day fair. The frame is welded metal to which the sides (1/4" ply) is bolted on. It is 8 sided with teh current roof being 1/2 plywood with shingles stapled to the wood. I would love to figure out how to make the roof 1) lighter and 2) make it look like thatch. Any ideas?
One of the things we're planning is an outside theatre space, , including merchant, demonstration, performance, and camping spaces, and we'd love your advice before we get in and actually start building stuff. What things would you like to see in a smallish regional theatre and event site? What things haven't worked for you? If you're a merchant, director, or performer, what stuff do you wish the sites would have that they DoNT usualy have.
Do us a great favor, if you will. Pop over to www.grindlebone.org, get a bit of flavor of just what kind of weirdos we are, and then come back and give us some advice on how to build your dream  site.
Conventional plays are built on combat. Two or more characters are in conflict; individual actors are engaged in internal conflict. There are goals, and characters struggle to achieve those goals, working on one another to change a person who get something they need, and succeeding or failing. Success and failure both bring consequences. This is the structure of drama.
Thus when actors rehearse a scene they are practicing combat.
Aikido students have to learn to work with complete commitment, yet also include consciousness of their partner. Before every exercise, there is a bow, and a promise to care for the flourishing of one's partner. Drew says the punch is real, and at the same time you are responsible to watch for your partner's safety and well-being. Soon, students are working hard on one another, encouraging each other to work with real commitment and courage, and caring for one another's progress.
This is how our acting community will operate. A little bit of technique, and a lifetime's worth of commitment and bravery. By getting this into our bodies with our martial arts practice, we can awaken to the same relationship in the psychic workings of a scene, and play out the conflicts of human existence with conscious awareness and fearless honesty.
So I have this friend--lets call him Algernon--and the other day he asks me, "How is theatre relevant anymore? Or more precisely, how are theatre artists relevant anymore? Aside from Tony Kushner, Justin Bond, and the members of the SITI Company, is anyone hip and interesting and dynamic making theatre these days? Or is it all just a bunch of Jai Rodriguez-wannabes singing geeky showtunes from musicals written fifty years ago?"
I was, of course, stunned, but frankly, I wasn't sure how to respond. Algernon meant well, and I could tell from the look on his face that he wasn't trying to be mean, just...candid. I guess you'd have to know him.
And in a way, he did have a point: much of the new work I've endured lately has been of the predictable/audience-pleasing musical variety. I could probably count on one hand the number of really innovative shows I've seen in the past 5 or 6 years--and most of those were mounted in offbeat spaces in cities not considered "theatre centers" like San Francisco and Provincetown. So I had to wonder: where's the next wave? Are Mr. Rodriguez and his cohorts the best we have to offer? Is that what audiences have to look forward to?
I'm hopeful that theatre's not a dead art form, but I don't get a sense that it's too vibrant these days. Thoughts?
Why We Sit Zen at Theatre Dojo
Why do we sit zen at Theatre Dojo?
In Japanese, the word for 'stage' literally means 'body of dancing.' The sense is that the empty space is the body, and actors are waves on its surface. The theatre space serves as a clear mirror on which a story or a non-linear form of expression is made accessible while stimulating the spectator's own creative awareness.
In Zen meditation, simple awareness is recognized as a person's original state of mind and their true nature, over which waves of conditioned habits and desires appear to cover up our original clarity and harmony with our world. This "loss" is yet another illusion: our conditioning is a hindrance only to the extent that we identify with our surface personality and its desires.
In Zen training, students practice a discipline of seated meditation every day, allowing the 'waves' to settle by themselves as they relax into their bodies' true center and release habitual thinking. We forgive our shortcomings and recognize that the whole world is the product of our thinking 'filters.'
A Dojo-trained actor has access to their entire self. No character and no human fantasy can be a stranger to you, because you contain the entire universe. You can play Hamlet or a cartoon character or a chorister in an avant garde play, because it is all you. And you are rather wonderful.
        Soma Olam (www.somaolam.com), a performance art company based in San Francisco, is looking for 1 female and 1 male performer to fill 2 paid positions starting immediately and continuing through the fall (potentially indefinitely).  Pay rate is $250/month with 2 rehearsals (4 hour and 3 hour) per week. We are currently featuring a show called "The Tears of Jelal" and will be touring briefly in late June and early July on the west coast as well as performing at a few west coast festivals in Aug and Sept.  We are currently working on new material for the show and are looking for people skilled in dance (modern, contemporary, butoh, ballet, hip hop, etc), capoeira, acrobatics, contact improv, prop manipulation, and aerial dance.  All of these skills are a plus and, of course, all are not expected.  We are currently in residence at Xenodrome Performance Space located @ 1320 Potrero Ave, San Francisco (in the Mission).
Please message me directly, RA (Rob Dixon), Artistic Director, with any questions or to set up an audition.  Please contact soon since these positions may fill up quickly.  Visit our web site:  www.somaolam.com
Soma Olam offers a unique, "impressionist" style of physical theater.  A multimedia performance troupe, we set out to create and explore emotional landscapes through visuals, soundscapes, and performative elements. These elements include aerial arts, stilting, dance, acro-balancing, multi-media projection, abstract lighting, elaborate set design, and special effects.
At the confluence of the personal and the universal, these performance journeys are multi-sensory and participatory.  We feel that through the window of the microcosm of human relation, we glimpse into the grander archetypes that govern our world and universe. Since our work uses only sparse language and occasional spoken word, it is not bound by language barriers, therefor keeping open the possibility of touring internationally.
"The Tears of Jelal"
"The heart... is made alive  by (one) who gives an outlet to intense feelings.
By so doing the clouds of jelal,  the power which gathers with psychic development,
fall in tears as drops of rain,
and the sky of (the) heart is clear,
allowing the soul to shine."
Hazrat Inayat Khan
Join us on a journey into the collective consciousness of humanity.  "TEARS OF JELAL..." the story of where we are now, how we got here, and most of all, what it will take to release what we are clinging to and move forward with grace.
Currently a 35 minute performance, Soma Olam sets out to tell an epic tale exploring humanity's experience of love, loss, separation, forgiveness and release.  It follows two characters, their guides, and the people of earth on their journey from creation to birth; from connection to separation; from light into shadow; and from shadow into... the unknown.  This is a look into what it will take for humankind to evolve into a brighter, more promising future.
Friday night (February 16) - The New England Showcase
Open to performers (troupes, duos, soloists; burlesque or boylesque) from one of the New England states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island or Vermont).  We'll even throw in a little upstate New York for good measure.  **Hosted by the darling of Dusseldorf, Miss (Born in Boston, raised on The Rhine) Astrid!**
Saturday (February 17):  - The Main Event
at which we distribute the First Annual Howard Awards. Not only prestigious, The Howards come with a variety of prizes and honoraria from our generous sponsors.
Sunday (February 18): -  TWO DIFFERENT SHOWS!
The first part of the evening is our "Newcomers Showcase" featuring the rising stars of burlesque.  Then it's "The Sideshow Ball", where the acts that accompanied classic burlesque – sword swallowing, knife throwing, hula hooping, juggling, and more ! – will really shine.
Download your very own copy of the application from http://www.Burlesque-expo.com/performer-application.pdf (it's a PDF; you'll need Adobe Acrobat to read it).
Hello fellow theatre enthusiasts.
The 35th annual Summer Mime Workspace with Samuel Avital has recently come to a close and here I am to share a few of my impressions with you.
Have you ever had the precious experience of coming together with a small group of like minded human beings to do a kind of work which it felt like you were on this earth to do? This is what the SUmmer Mime Workspace was like for me. Samuel Avital seemes to me to be a rare and precious teacher. He sees the good in all human beings and he encourages us to leap from the valleys of mediocrity to the peaks of excellence. To encounter the work of Mime is to be immediately stripped of pretense because though we can obscure the truth with our words, the body is totally honest.
Have you heard the proverb, "The camel never sees it's own hump?" There were many times during the Mime Workshop when I thought that I understood how to manifest a particular technique until Samuel brought me in front of the group to demonstrate. By watching how I moved my body, everybody in the group could see the nature of my misunderstanding, even when I couldn't. Thankfully Samuel is able to reflect limitations so that they can be seen and so we can work in a directed way to restore our natural ways of moving in the world. The experience was humbling without being humiliating.
Samuel has a good heart and has a wide open sense of humor that arises from a very large perspective of living on this planet. He was raised in Morocco by a family with deep spiritual roots in the Kabbalah. After many adventures, Samuel arived in Paris to study closely with Etienne Decroux as well as Marcel Marceau and Jean-Louis Barrault. Samuel toured Europe for years with Maximilian Decroux before coming to America to perform teach and finally settle around Boulder,Colorado where he has guided many people towards a vital means of authentic creative expression.
Everyone who participated in this summer workshop came away feeling gratitude and inspiration.
Here's a brief summary of things I learned.
Manifesting mental images into physical body positions forms the basis of a precise mode of expression.
Exaggeration is accomplished by relaxing the body so that emotional energy can circulate more freely.
Culturally conditioned anxieties and tensions restrict theatrical expressions. Becoming a good actor requires significant unconditioning.
Assuming new positions awakens unique perspectives and intelligence in the body.
In order to lead without coercion, an atmosphere of trust must be present. Aberrant muscle tension and resistance are physical manifestations of mistrust.
It is a great art to trust and learn to allow natural responses to gentle touch.
In Mime we must learn the art of being simultaneously alert and relaxed.
This path of Mime requires clarity of focus, vibrancy of imagination, precision of execution, release of inhibition, and a longing to draw near the source of our creativity. For me, Mime has awakened a wish to relax and expand into an authentic way of creative being.
Wow, after so many words about the silent art of mime, I feel like I barely scratched the surface of this wonderful experience.
If you want to learn more about Samuel Avital and his work, visit his website at www.bodyspeak.com.
There's also an extraordinary recent interview with Samuel posted at www.kabbalahnow.indranet.com/about/ijhc.html
Pig Iron's OBIE Award-winning HELL MEETS HENRY HALFWAY in Philadelphia!
* * * * * * * * * * * * *
Pig Iron Theatre Company brings its Obie-Award winning production of
HELL
MEETS HENRY HALFWAY back to Philadelphia, in the fourth slot of our
10th
Anniversary Season, for One Week Only --- April 11 - 16.
Since its debut at the 2004 Philadelphia Live Arts Festival, HELL MEETS
HENRY HALFWAY has traveled to festivals in
Poland, Lithuania and New York City, with
additional performances in Princeton and Boston.
Receiving rave reviews in every city,
and appearing prominently in every Philadelphia top-ten list for
theatre, the show was also honored with an OBIE Award in May 2005.
A scorched-earth black comedy, HELL MEETS HENRY HALFWAY is a florid
cocktail of insults and absurd cruelties, whose malcontented characters erupt
into arias of complaint at the least provocation.  At turns hilarious and
horrific, the play tells the story of a mad prince and his caretaker
Henry, who has spent years waiting to inherit.  Henry's discontented fiancée
is growing distant as she finds herself more and more entwined with her
misanthropic tennis coach Walczak.  As things go slowly -- and
uproariously -- downhill, HELL MEETS HENRY HALFWAY presents its audience with at a
dark, shifting world where the only constant is the inexorable plucking of a
strained heartstring.
This Pig Iron creation is based on POSSESSED, a pulp horror novel by
Witold Gombrowicz, the enfant terrible of modern Polish literature.  Written
as an attempt to pocket a little money, the novel spotlights the writer's
ferocious contempt for a decadent culture in decline.  Pig Iron found
Gombrowicz's ideal adaptor in playwright Adriano Shaplin, founder of the
internationally known collective The Riot Group (Four-time Fringe First-winner,
Edinburgh) and chief collaborator on this project.  Shaplin's hyperverbal,
fiercely intelligent text clashes and meshes with Pig Iron’s physically-based
style in unexpected ways, making HELL MEETS HENRY HALFWAY a unique entry in
Pig Iron's body of work.
"Absurd, unbalancing, and exhilarating -- a Tilt-a-Whirl of a show that
leaves
you dizzy and means to." --The New York Times
Luke 20s rock tenor. Sings comfortably on G and be able to pop to an A. A bright, clear vocal preferred. Should be sympathetic and attractive. Strong actor.
Erik 20s baritone (floats to an E), acoustic guitar a plus. Good folk ballad voice, charming.
Andrew 20s/30s Baritone/bass low G to Eb. Legitimate voice, debonair.
SF THEATER FESTIVAL INVITES ENTRIES
The San Francisco Theater Festival invites theater groups to participate in its third annual free festival on Sunday, July 23, 2006, at Yerba Buena Gardens, in both indoor and outdoor venues, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
All types and styles of theater are welcome, including children’s theater. Last year’s festival had 50+ shows attended by 4,500 people (30% more than year before). This is the biggest theater event of the year. Be a part of it! There is no fee to participate and theater companies gain visibility, distribute marketing materials, build mailing lists, and most importantly, promote theatergoing. Presentations should be under 30 minutes, e.g. excerpts, one-acts, selections.
Application deadline is April 1, 2006, however earlier applications, even those with limited detail, receive priority consideration for venue and time slot. More information: www.sftheaterfestival.org, andy@sftheaterfestival.org; 415-291-8655, 415-291-8690 (Fax).
anyone here have any first hand, second hand, perhaps third hand account about the Norwegian Theatre Academy in Fredrikstad, Norway. It looks interesting and seems to have a great concentration in physical theatre and visual arts.
